Description
La Bande Vidéo and MANIF D’ART joins forces again for the third edition of Jardin d’hiver, curated by Julien St-Georges Tremblay!
We are pleased to collaborate to the dissemination of four works by artist Catherine Boisvenue Ménard, whom we met during the course of the second edition of our online program, Subject to change(s).
How do insects dance? Drawing inspiration from movements in the tiny insect world, Catherine Boisvenue Ménard undergoes her own metamorphosis, creating costumes controlled like puppets, which become extensions of her body. Discussing her works, the artist says that she is trying to reveal “the hidden power of the body.” Donning her sculpture-garments, the performer becomes an indescribable “bug” with a unique body language, which she captures on her video camera. The settings for the artist’s disguises are distorted reproductions of the forms and colours of the costumes, and when she changes her disguise, the decor transforms to express her symbiosis with her environment.
Bio
Catherine Boisvenue Ménard is an interdisciplinary artist from Montreal/Tiohti:áke. She seeks to reappropriate an imaginary of the body she conceives as porous and able to feel or become “the world.” To manifest her vision, she creates maneuverable sculptures with appearances inspired by plants, insects, or geology. Her transgressive nature fuels her explorations of diverse creative processes, from painting, sculpture, and puppet theatre to installation and video art. The artist is involved in the development of the visual arts in Canada, and has shown her work in Brazil and Germany.
