Description

VERSION ORIGINALE

« I plan to make a short film that uses the pinscreen to translate my CG figures and hand-drawn animation into a film noir of associative moments, all touching on the subject of « grotesques ». An interest in constant mutation is rooted in all of my work, and I will continue to explore this from the angle of the grotesque, circling around the history of this designation and word. The film will be a series of poetic connections on this theme rather than direct narrative. I’m interested in the connecting qualities and transformations found in Parker and Alexeieff’s classic pinscreen animation Night on Bald Mountain. I’m thinking about how the visuals of the pinscreen bridge the look of different technologies over time. The analog manipulation of small points of light create a look that is simultaneously reminiscent of black and white computer grid dots, pixelation, and printing. I often fuse the virtual and physical in my work, and am drawn to processes that require extreme slowing down. I feel this rare access to the historic tool of the pinscreen is the ideal format to create a noir-inspired piece focused on the history of grotesque imagery in architecture, printing, drawing and sculpture, and as expression of the experience of a body. »

BIO

Lilli Carré is an interdisciplinary artist from Los Angeles, working primarily in experimental animation, print, and sculpture. Much of her work explores mutability, and the open-ended possibilities and histories of the animated body – simultaneously physical and virtual, free of expectations or fixed form. Her work has been included in festivals, graphic novels, and gallery spaces internationally, and she is a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow in Film-Video. She co-curates the annual Eyeworks Experimental Animation Screening Series founded in 2010, and currently teaches in the Experimental Animation program at CalArts.
