Description

À l’occasion de sa résidence, Michael Flomen prévoit travailler au montage d’une vidéo brute réalisée à partir de la lumière bioluminescente de lucioles. Une trame sonore originale rythmera le film. L’installation proposée comportera au moins trois écrans de projection afin d’enveloper le regardeur.

BIO

Michael Flomen est né à Montréal en 1952. Il a commencé à faire de la photographie à la fin des années 1960 et expose ses œuvres sur plusieurs continents depuis 1972. Il a été tireur en chambre noire et a collaboré avec de nombreux artistes, notamment pour l’exposition itinérante de Jacques-Henri Lartigue au Canada et aux États-Unis au milieu des années 70. Son premier livre de « photographies de rue », qui suivait le formalisme cartier-bressonien de la photographie, a été publié en 1980, suivi de Still Life Draped Stone en 1985. Au début des années 90, Flomen change de format photographique, capturant la neige et produisant des œuvres sous le titre RISING. Depuis 25 ans, cet artiste autodidacte fait usage de techniques sans appareil photo dans le but de collaborer avec la nature. L’eau, la lumière des lucioles, le vent et autres phénomènes naturels inspirent ses créations.

Le travail de Michael Flomen se retrouve dans les collections de la George Eastman House, du Los Angeles County Museum of Art, du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, du Norton Museum of Fine Art, du Philadelphia Museum of Fine Art, du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada et du Whitney Museum of American Art, entre autres.

During the course of his residency, Michael Flomen plans on editing raw video made with the bioluminescent light of fireflies. An original soundtrack will dictate the rhythm of the film. The proposed installation will have at least three projection screen to envelope the viewer.

BIO

Michael Flomen was born in Montreal in 1952. He began taking photographs in the late ’60s, and has been showing his work on several continents since 1972. He has been a darkroom printer and collaborator for many artists including Jacques Henri Lartigue’s traveling exhibition in Canada and the United States in the mid ’70s. Flomen’s first book of « street photographs », which followed the Cartier-Bresson formalism of photographic picture making, was published in 1980, follow by Still Life Draped Stone in 1985. Flomen switched camera formats in the early ’90s, photographing snow and producing works under the title RISING. For the last 25 years, this self-taught artist has used camera-less techniques to collaborate with nature. Various forms of water, firefly light, wind, and other natural phenomena are the inspiration for his picture making. Michael Flomen’s work is in the collections of George Eastman House, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Norton Museum of Fine Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
