VERSION ORIGINALE
K-DIALECTICS is a multidisciplinary archival project that explores the violent legacy of Japanese colonialism within Korean diasporic memory through a photo-textile installation and experimental animation. Grounded in archival collaboration with Korean institutions and activists, the project avoids linear storytelling in favor of fragmentation, rupture, and contradiction—expressive strategies that mirror the effects of historical trauma.
The photo-textile component uses « Split Photography » to distort archival images, forcing viewers to navigate incomplete and fractured visuals that reflect the impossibility of fully representing trauma. The animation reimagines survivors’ testimonial sketches, examining how colonial domination creates the conditions for resistance. By highlighting Korea’s anticolonial struggle—from independence movements to cultural preservation—the work traces how memory and unresolved histories persist as spectral forces.
Together the two components stage a dialectical encounter in which memory does not reconcile or resolve, but instead persists as contradiction to dominant narratives, returning as the trace of what history attempts to suppress, and insisting on its continual becoming through absence, rupture, and resistance.
BIO
Bomi Yook is a media artist based in Calgary, working with immersive media, experimental animation, and video performance. Her work explores hybridity within identity, cultural landscapes, and knowledge systems, often drawing on the collective memory of the Korean diaspora, with its complex ties to immigration and colonization. Navigating the nuances of belonging to multiple cultural frameworks, Yook’s practice reflects on the paradoxical nature of identity, emphasizing its incompleteness, incongruity, and intersubjectivity. Exploring the Ecologies of Trace—of the Other and Otherness within the self—her works reveal identity and ideologies as inter-constitutive, seeing the world as a paradoxical blend of contexts rather than distinct, isolated definitions.
